I, too, was surprised at Jared's comment regarding breadcrumbs.

We see that folks often use breadcrumbs if they sense that they've
been shuffled over into a parallel hierarchy (from "Products" to
"Services", for example) or if they want to get back to the home
page. (No hard stats on either of these statements. Sorry. Feel free
to assume I'm making this up. Or start counting clicks in your tests.)

In fact, we see that more people are likely to hit a breadcrumb that
reads "Home" than a logo somewhere in the top 60-80 pixels, a
convention that is significantly less established than we experienced
users are generally willing to admit :)
