Isn't benign neglect of business imperatives a basic requirement of Web 2.0?

Literally four days ago, I was meeting with a VP of a financial services
company. He's an MBA and knows his domain pretty well. Perhaps too well. As
I began to describe to him the fairly sweeping changes I was working on that
would change various processes in his department and how he would then
relate to rest of the company, I detected on his face a sign of utter
disbelief. Finally, he blurted it out: "Do you even know what business we're
in?" (To him, the company's domain was determined by the discreet financial
products it offered.) I said, you're in the 'information brokerage'
business, just the way, say, FedEx is not in the package delivery business.

So misconceptions of information as a vector of business is not confined to
just that group. :-)
