I often search google using site:au or site:edu ... it definitely searches
subdomains.

I wouldn't expect that searching with 'site:www.domain.com' would include
"subdomains" because they wouldn't be subdomains, but siblings instead.
There's not many sites I know with domains like "sub.www.domain.com" ;-)
