The argument used (and I believe it is a poor one) is monetization.
I am not against exploiting focussed communities for material gain (I do
it myself), but I am against the over-simplification of the "we have to
have their email addresses at all costs!".
If you are going to run an email marketing campaign, and the community
members are going to be genuinely interested, let them opt-in to that
campaign, not hit everyone on the board. Targetted campaigns pay the
bills (unless you are in traditional advertising or any other area where
CTR is King).
