Grid of capabilities sounds like a good idea, expanded.

But don't limit your course to general search engines. How about
ebay, ibm, amazon, ... etc, and geographic, reverse phone, concept,
music, propinquity, ... searches

Get the students to expand the grid by adding features.

Create a new grid showing examples of each feature in use in each
engine, or how you have to transform to get it to work.
