--- NISO Ballot Announcement: Z39.19-200X - Revised and Out-for-Ballot NISO Standard Z39.19, now titled Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Controlled Vocabularies, has been revised and is available for ballot and review by all NISO Members. Balloting Period: April 11, 2005 to May 25, 2005 The revised draft standard and balloting instructions are at: http://www.niso.org/standards/balloting.html The standard has been expanded considerably and grown to 172 pages. In this revision of the Z39.19 standard: . More user-friendly language is incorporated and explanations of important concepts and principles are provided. . The standard takes into account changes in information technology, the various ways that users search or browse, and the many types of content they find. . The scope of the revised standard addresses the needs presented by a variety of information producing organizations and different types of content; examples throughout the document are relevant to business and industry. This revised standard is a collaboration among a number of NISO members and leading experts in the information field. The process used demonstrates a shift in NISO's standards development approach. The parameters of the revision were first defined at a pre-standards workshop NISO held in 1999. With the support of The H.W. Wilson Foundation, The Getty Grant Program, and the National Library of Medicine resources were provided to undertake the revision. The following persons were members of the development team that revised Z39.19: . Emily Fayen (MuseGlobal), Project Lead . Vivian Bliss (Microsoft Corporation) . Carol Brent (ProQuest Information and Learning) . David Clarke (Synapse Corporation) . John Dickert (U.S. Department of Defense, DTIC) . Lynn El-Hoshy (Library of Congress) . Marcia Lei Zeng (representing the Special Libraries Association) Cynthia Hodgson, on NISO's editorial staff, worked closely with the revision group to see this project through to completion. NISO's thanks goes to this outstanding group for their time, talent, expertise, and dedication. Now, Voting Members, you are invited to review this standard. Please return your ballot by May 25. Thank You! A lot of the time it's going to depend on the capabilities of that particular CMS. For example, whether it strictly separates out content from presentation, allows some form of markup, manages images from the local file system or via an online library of some kind, etc. etc.. Then there's the users - how do they work? How would they like to work if a CMS wasn't telling them how? Once or twice, I've wondered whether identifying a "bad interface" in a CMS is in fact missing the point, and that it's the overall *use* for the CMS (whatever the interface) in the business that's the problem. For that reason, I'd put a lot of my time into some contextual enquiry - then test some mock-ups of candidate interfaces, etc. But you might uncover some problems that aren't to do with the UI. Overall though, I don't think you can get very far in this area fishing about for good examples or best practice. During May and June - I plan to interview 20 individuals who use facets, facet analysis, or faceted classification as site components. Earlier work relating to this study is posted here: http://mypage.iu.edu/~klabarre/facetstudy.html Interviews will not last more than one hour, will be conducted individually, and will be conducted at your office or other convenient place. A transcript of the interview will be made. Each participant will receive a copy and can edit the interview transcript. The names of participants will be kept confidential. The result of these interviews and a preceding study of a random sample of websites, will be the creation of a checklist or set of guidelines for faceted website design and construction. Each participant in the study will receive a copy. Once completed, the results of this study will be posted on my website. If you are interested in participating, or would like to know more about this study, please contact me / klabarre_at_indiana.edu Kathryn La Barre http://mypage.iu.edu/~klabarre doctoral candidate, School of Library and Information Science Indiana University ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Sigia-l mailing list Sigia-l_at_asis.org http://mail.asis.org/mailman/listinfo/sigia-l End of Sigia-l Digest, Vol 7, Issue 15 **************************************
