I understand what you're saying and on some levels I agree. But,
several times on this list I've seen people write that I have to get
the data this way or that way due to database limitations. I've found
most DBA's to be pretty receptive to input, it seems that most times
they are normalizing data to an arbitrary degree because they seldom
have access to people that can relay the eventual uses of the data in a
rational and intelligent way. In most cases I've found that they view
marketers and business people as outsiders while they consider us
someone that's on the same boat with them.
Should IAs become DBAs? No. Should IAs understand the fundamentals of
data structure/normalization and be able to talk with the DBA in
terminology they understand and can appreciate? I think so.
