In other words, they didn't abrubptly switch from yellow to white.

Looks like Urban-Legend-ism at work here. It would be so much better a
story if they really *had* gone and made the switch and users screamed.
 
Alternately, it could be true and it's the ebay people spinning the
story their own way...
