Know your audience.
Do you think a multi-millionaire is doing this for the money? They're
doing it to help a cause that they believe in. And the gift
certificate, or donation to a charity, is a simply gesture of
appreciation.
For one of the groups at Cornell, a lab that studies birds, whales,
elephants, and frogs, we gave the participants one of their latest
audio CD. It's only about $15 in monetary value, but the participants,
all very wealthy individuals (multi-millionaires to billionaires),
really appreciated the "gift." There were about 5 to choose from, of a
library of around 20+. We let them take their pick of one of the latest
5. They were delighted.
Consider the audience. Consider the goals. Consider the environment.
Then select an appropriate gesture of appreciation, or reward. It's all
quite relative.
