I don't think you can right after the learning process, but you will be able
to do that statistically after you tried the solution out for a while.

Technically, you can force them to go through a first screen (with my video
suggestion, or whatever option you choose), before they get to the first
screen of the app. A simple JavaScript does that, but there are other ways
too (Flash & server side) Don't know by heart though, would need to
investigate. But I've seen implemented.

Just like multiple-page forms which you need to fill out in order, the
teaching part would be the first page and the app forms would follow. In
this case I wouldn't use a pop-up, but the main screen where the app will be
the next thing they'll see.
