I think it should only be used by us. Having participants organize the
information for us is like asking users to design their own solution. That
is what they pay us for! They usually are not trained to do design work and
take into consideration conflicting goals, but we are.
uhm, that kind of defeats the purpose of the exercise. all we'd be doing then is playing with a bunch of cards, rather than playing directly in visio, omnigraffle, freehand, pen & paper, blood on concrete, etc.
card-sorting gives *some* insight to a user's perspective. you just have to make sure you carefully describe the rules of the game and then use the results as a *guide*.
