I agree. That's exactly what I did for our internal site that links to many
types of files, not just PDFs:

I think the task here is not to figure out the best way to *rename* the PDF
file type, but rather what is the best way to *educate* the user as to what
it is. Why? Because once they leave your site, they are going to encounter
the name "PDF" again anyway. It seems counter-intuitive, in this little
matter, to create a new name; it will only cause confusion in the long run.
Eventually, people will learn, just as they have what a word doc and excel
file is, and we should seek to facilitate it.
