If you check the archives there was a conversation back in February of 2002
discussing (debating) the relative 'success' of Amazon as a company.
At that time Ziya said: "It's silly to argue that Amazon is unique or will
*continue* to make money, since it never has."
I pointed to the financial indicators, then, that showed otherwise and
shared my own 'insiders perspective' on the overall strategy that I believed
Bezos was engaging in, which took time to 'pay out'.
In the December 30th edition of Fortune Magazine there were a series of
vignettes (remember when that word had a pleasant mental picture?) under the
general heading of "What Went Right". For the subcategory of E-Commerce, the
focus was placed on Jeff Bezos and Amazon. "This year Amazon was the
best-performing stock of the NASDAQ 100, up more than 100%, to about $22 a
share. Bezos finally got costs under control and Amazon is expected to be
profitable in the fourth quarter. There's also great optimism about growth;
Amazon's revenues are expected to be up about 25% this year."
I stand vindicated. I at least consider Ziya for technical advice, but he's
probably not a first-choice resource for business observation or strategic
analysis. To miss the call on the top-performing company of the NASDAQ 100
for 2002...
