The key is customization off the base product. For developers and
implementors, packages compete based on how customizable they are. Just
like most other things in this world, extranets have a base set of
functions. A team can take the package and add/modify functional modules to
match the product to the client needs.

Back in the day, the only way to go was build-from-scratch, which is
inherently wasteful, oversized in time/budget and usually poorly designed to
boot. Now, for the vast majority of companies, a customized package will do
just fine.
