[Sigia-l] redesign: incremental or all-in-one?

Hi all
Imagine, if you can, an online service that has a usable UI with
findable content and large userbase who are familiar with the structure
and UI widgets/tools used. If circumstances make a significant redesign
necessary, is it best to introduce the redesigned service incrementally
or all in one go?
I am interested in any accounts/examples of such transitions, advice on
the best approach and if it exists research/reports on the success of
various approaches. I will summarise for the group.
Thanks for your help.
