I'm working on some projects getting good results with Marti Hearst's
faceted metadata approach. Try the interfaces at
<http://flamenco.berkeley.edu> to see what I mean. The dynamic
previews with counts of the contents in the attributes avoids a lot
of dead-ends and frustration.
