And therein lies my usual solution to this problem.
I'd say, "OK, we need to choose the technology, so
first we need to determine the requirements
("requirements" is often a concept/language IT folks
relate to). And in order to establish the requirements
we need to know what we'll be displaying and if that
satisfies the user's requirements in order to reduce
risk ("risk" is another great word)" and so on. I
basically just work from where they are and back into
a place that can benefit them, meaning a user-centered
design process.
