Don't know of any research, but in left-to-right reading countries, there's
a argument to be made that a right-hand navigation avoids "clutter" when
the eye returns to the start of a new line.
However, I'm not sure it's a strong argument since I suspect most people
adjust their eye movements the main area. And in fact, in traditional
(print) publication design, sidebar content is usually in a secondary
column that's along the outside edge -- meaning it can be either left-hand
or right-hand.
But while we're on the subject, it's worth noting that the main reason left-
hand navigation developed as a convention was that back in the early days
of the web was that coding-wise it was easier to deal with variable browser
window sizes by anchoring it to the left.
