Regarding David's, Terie's and Andrew's comments on types of learning
methods:
Way back when I was in college, I spent a term (between classes) working as
a Special Education Teaching Assistant with elementary students. I remember
helping several students learn to read and spell by spending hours writing
simple words in colored sand with their index fingers. Eventually -- after
weeks of this work -- several of them were able to consistently remember a
dozen or so words...
I still take copious handwritten notes, and only occassionally re-read them.
The process of writing them by hand works much better than typing to firmly
plant them in my memory...
