Thanks to those who responded, both with advice and with examples. Some of the consistent general thoughts:
- Callouts should be in a separate, distinct color from the wire frame itself.
- Put callouts in separate layers that can be turned on and off for printing or for showing different audiences (client, developers). Some had set up their Visio stencils to do this automatically.
- Most advocated putting the callouts as close as possible to the objects they were annotating, but it seemed that equally, people used side or footnotes to do so. No consensus here.
