SIGIA-L: Annotating Wire Frames

I'm working to create some paper wire frame templates for i/i/i/i design as part of a Best Practices initiative and to improve my own documentation. I was wondering what you all thought about the placement of annotations on wire frames. I've seen them on the side and on the bottom, and am torn as to where to place them.
They are more accessible to the side, but sometimes are confused as being part of the wire frame. At the bottom of the page they are more clearly differentiated, but farther away from the objects they annotate. Another way I've seen is to place the annotation beside the object or in a "thoughtbubble-esque" box that "springs" from the object.
Anyone have any suggestions (or better yet, examples) for annotations?
