For building giant diagrams (for example, 40"x40"), I usually turn on
the "View / Page Breaks" feature and simply make sure that my diagrams
avoid the border areas. I modularize the diagram to fit into the large
grid. It's a bit of a compromise in that I still have to sometimes fit a
lot of stuff into each letter/legal/tabloid sized chunk of the large
page, but at least I can easily see all of the diagrams at once.

This single gigantic image can be printed either as a single gigantic
printout (for example, on a paper-roll plotter), exported as a big image
file (PDF, EPS, GIF, etc), or for day to day printing it can simply be
printed on many normal printer pages (letter, legal, tabloid).

If I want to manage multiple pages (the tabs along the bottom) I like to
customize the toolbar and add some new buttons to the interface: Go To
Page... (a dropdown), Go to next page, and Go to previous page. It makes
flipping between pages a lot easier than the tab system at the bottom.
Right click any toolbar and pick "Customize" to add toolbars and
buttons.
