SIGIA-L: Tunnel Approach?

Hello there,

I heard that "Tunnel" or "Tutorial" approach which guide users step by step
to retrieve the information they want is not a sound idea because:

1. Users get bore while going through the steps, which means they often
want to skip one or more steps.

2. Too much distraction on the road, which means user may click any other
links during this process thus terminate the tutorial.

3. The tunnel or tutorial is not flexible enough to meet user's needs.

4. ...

Well, I wonder whether you know any literature regarding this topic. I am
curious whether someone has identified the elements that contribute to the
good/bad tunnel/tutorial design.
