I think you don't really *have* to use presentation software. PowerPoint and
the like have not been around for that long. There was no PowerPoint when
most of graduated from college.

If you are a good speaker, transparent sheets (with an overhead projector)
and hand-outs will probably be sufficient. You can make your transparent
sheets with your word processor and have them printed at your local
photocopy shop. Or you can write the text down yourself using a permanent
marker.

Do you think this is too low-tech? You can use the digital camera technique
then. You need:
- to know how to visualize ideas
- computer + beamer
- digital camera (even a cheap one is OK)
- whiteboard
- some whiteboard markers
all you have to do is write or draw on the whiteboard as you speak and use
the camera to enlarge what you are writing down or drawing on the
whiteboard.
I learnt this technique from 3 students of mine at the Amsterdam
Polytechnic. Their powerpoint-less presentation was fantastic!
