We are actually in the process of making the switch, so your question is timely
to me.
Our site holds a large depository of scientific documents. Early on, the OR
solution worked pretty well, since, if people used AND, they would not have
gotten much of anything. As the site grew, OR returned search results that were
too large to manage. Now we are in the process of switching over, and so far, it
looks like the right decision (I am still testing right now).
I would just be sure to allow for both options and explain the one that is not a
default clearly.

Subject: SIGIA-L: Site search engine question
Colleagues,
Has anyone seen any research on the merits of using a default OR or AND in
site search engines? Which type of default is most common on site search
engines? Most of the major Web-wide search engines seem to default to
"and." Thanks in advance.
