All classification of music by the RIAA and other industry groups is
suspect to musicians and musicologists. For instance, "country and
western" was a merging of two separate Billboard categories in the late
forties. This put the Carter Family, Chet Atkins, and Roy Rogers in the
same camp.

But a taxonomy of music is certainly important. I think it is quite
possible, but one of the problems in the past has been the way the industry
likes to pigeonhole artists into distinct categories.
