Check out a recent research report from UIE - (it's only 25$, and worth
it).
They discuss eight "best practices" for web sites. Best practice #1 is
"keep users from using search", best practice #5 discusses how to use
search logs to improve your site.

See http://world.std.com/~uieweb/bestPracticesDesc.htm for details.

Subject: SIGIA-L: To search or not to search?

I am in the midst of a debate with the rest of my project team as to
whether
or not a "Search" feature should be included on the site we're
designing.
I'll spare you the details, but I was wondering - is there any
information
out there defining "guidelines" on when a Search feature should and
should
not be included on a web site?

The only information I've been able to find is an old article by Jakob
Nielsen in which he pretty much sums it up by saying that Search should
be
included if you have 200+ pages on the site. It seems like there must
me
more that needs to be taken into consideration than just page count
though.
Any thoughts?
