Quick question...
Have any of these research sites taken into account this scenario?
Shortly after the news broke on 9/11, a massive rush occurs to all of the news sites. cnn.com, foxnews.com, abcnews.com, and many, MANY more shut down because of the unexpected load. The users, most of whom are not web experts start scratching their heads, wondering if cnn.com is really the address for cnn.com. They pull up their favorite search engine, most likely Yahoo, which uses Google, or google itself. The user, not knowing any better, types in cnn or world trade center, or new york, or something else related. They get confused when their chosen news site does not come up, and search again. Not knowing that the magical web is choking on the traffic, they scratch their heads once more, and try to find the nearest television.
This does not surprise me as I have had to make every single application I have ever worked on "double-click" safe. Explaining to a user that they should only click on a link once versus an icon twice, is completely pointless.
I work in a pretty large office building. A lot of people were frustrated with the news sites. I could not connect to any news sites, like Reuters, AP, Fox News, CNN, ABC, BBC, NBCi, Netscape, Yahoo, and the list goes on. On my way home, I walked by a Radio Shack that was not even open yet, which had a line of 50 to 60 people all joking around about buying portable televisions.
Articles were published shortly after the attacks that publicized the failure of the internet during the crisis. Looking at Router traffic, I would say that we seriously need to beef up our IT infrastructure. Maybe we can accomplish this while we make our networks EMP safe.
Just a little food for thought...
