I used to run Mhonarc to document project email:

I would then set up a perl cgi to search the archives. Don't think I'd have
enough space on my host to save all the messages myself, but maybe can be
don on ASIS server? I've found that it works pretty well. Other packages
like Lyris give you search and archiving features out of the box I think.
