I highly recommend reading the new book "Breaking Windows" by David
Bank. This is one of the best Microsoft books yet written and talks
an awful lot about the .Net decision.
MS is definitely trying to use .Net to extend their power into the
next age of software. And you can't blame them. But it also shows
how they went into it: through a back door and reluctantly. And Bank
also points out how people (eventually) realized that Java is no
more open than Windows.
