Setting all the other arguments aside, aren't you ignoring the fact that
some users *automatically* go to the site map as a way of navigating to a
particular content item? I know, because I am one of them. I also commonly
view the site map as a way of quickly getting a birds eye view of the site,
without having to examine each major navigation section separately.

I absolutely agree that sometimes a site map is used as a panacea for
navigation that isn't well formed and/or articulated. But there will always
be users who *prefer* to use it rather than other means of locating relevant
content. That said, I think it would be foolhardy to eliminate it.

Wouldn't you agree that some megastores are/can be better structured for
easier navigation than others?
