This will change.
And there are several factors contributing here:
We've come a long way since the days of Pathfinder. Even the most
paleolithic owners are beginning to understand that shoveling everything
into a one-size-fits-all black hole isn't a very efficient solution.
Cost of web site development, storage, equipment, bandwidth and, yes, even
salaries are coming down significantly.
Cost of finding, serving, exchanging and archiving data/information will
be reduced significantly with XML and web services so that a lot of the
manual stuff done by users today will be automated at the PC/server level.
Through web services and syndication as well as dynamic serving, the
concept of a "site" that can be depicted accurately and currently in a
frozen state will also become more anachronistic.
I could cite a few other factors as well, but the trend is clear to me:
modularity, dynamism, specialization and focus will win over size.
And not a minute too soon.
Best,
Ziya
