Maybe.
I have nothing against such attempts. Indeed, I prototyped a
database-generated nav system for a financial communications company when
Hot Sauce first appeared, about six years ago. I also showed the prototype
to investment banks (that ought to know/care about visualization of
high-volume data). Perhaps the Web was also so new at the time, but there
was absolutely no interest. I'm both a visual guy and a developer so the
prototype was fairly rich and enhanced by all sorts of dynamic, supporting
systems around the 3D space, but it didn't help. In the intervening years,
there have been a number of commercial products that also failed to get
any traction whatsoever.
Maybe the more current reiterations of the idea of spatial representation
of data will have a better chance of success. One of the principle
problems with this notion is that, in order for it to succeed it has
appeal to business first. Well, people who are involved with data mining
and large scale data manipulation are a highly trained, specialized bunch.
They are quite efficient with what they are doing and, like everybody
else, quite averse to fundamental change.
So after the novelty wears off, for serious, large-scale enterprise
applications where profit is involved, I don't see much demand. Hopefully,
I'm wrong :-)
