SIGIA-L: User Research: Users of 'Association' Web Sites

Community Members,
I am about to embark on a web site redesign project.... the site is for a
national association's users, with users currently broadly defined as:
* Non-members - this universe is comprised of prospective members,
sponsors and affiliates, law firms, consultants, press, congressional
staff,
senior government officials, etc.
* Members - one of the association's 300 member companies and all
their users (member employees register with the association to obtain
username and password.)
* Potential conference attendees and individuals/companies who wish to
purchase publications and services from the association.
I am in search of resources/references/documentation, specific to the
association arena, that will assist me in better getting my hands around
users (and their nuances) of association web sites. Any and all guidance
would be most appreciated.
