The following is a short summary of resources that were sent directly to me.
I'm also including a spreadsheet of some tools I've found on my own.
Perhaps we can compile them on the ASIS IA website and other websites that
refer to IA & software...

Jesus Mena's book, "Data Mining Your Website," has a
whole chapter, no. 7 The Providers, on external
sources of information, including Claritas, Autonomy,
and others. This chapter would certainly help you
with your research. I can drop a copy in the mail
(it's over 30 pages) for you.

 A variety of AI techniques have been used to automate
classification. Other key words of interest:
  information theoretic measures (ID3, Quinlan, Shannon)
  clustering algorithms
  machine learning
  memory-based reasoning (Waltz, Stanfield, Smith)
  neural nets

 ID3 has been available commercially from a variey of sources.
