Where was a really great newsletter from InfoVis devoted to mapping. Let me
know and I'll include it for you or you can get it in their archives at
http://www.infovis.net/E-zine/Magazine.htm
My favorite examples are:
antarcti.ca
webmap.net
smartmoney.com (their map of the market is probably one of my favorite and
most useful interfaces I have seen in a very long time.
There is a site devoted to the using of Mapping w/ some examples at
http://mappa.mundi.net/
Finally there is a book called Mapping Web Sites that deals w/ all aspects
of mapping, from building sitemaps and florcharts for documentation, to
creating sitemaps for the actual web site as a form of navigation. I really
like it.
I hope this is helpful to you.
Good luck!

Subject: SIGIA-L: Maps as Navigation
I have not seen a specific discussion of this topic nor any real studies. I
am interested in hearing peoples experience/thoughts on using maps as a way
to navigate to local-specific content. Specifically, the use of clickable
map where users select their state (US) by clicking on the state. Is the
interface helpful enough to balance the extra load time of a graphic large
enough to differentiate US states? If not, what alternatives provide the
most useful solution in the smallest amount of space.
The de facto standard, and the one I will most likely suggest, is the
typical "Choose your state" drop down. The marketing people, of course, will
not find this as "exciting" or aesthetically pleasing. The drop down is the
standard for nearly every ecommerce and info gathering form I have seen so
despite its usability limitations, it seems that it is what people already
expect. However, there are plenty of clickable maps out there and I wanted
to give that concept a chance. Thanks in advance for any input.
