SIGIA-L: Architecting Sites for Multiple User Groups

ASIS list members,

I am looking for documented resources/references (sorry, please hold all
"opinions") that address the following......

I am building a site that potentially has several (i.e. 4 to 6) distinct
user groups. Each user group could have its own needs for using the site.
Or, in other words, not all the site's functionality will be used by all the
users.

Given this, I am wrestling with constructing an architecture for the site.
Is it preferable to:

1. Create one site with one navigation architecture, but create
"personalized views" for each of the user groups that pull relevant content
from the site to sort of a landing page for a given user group. In this
case, the reality is that all the site's functionality would be available to
all users, but we're highlighting what's relevant to specific users. So,
upon entry into the site, I identify myself as user "x" and the site
highlights what's very relevant to me. However, if I am in the mood and have
some time to kill, I might be inclined to peruse the rest of the site's
functionality, even though it may not be relevant to me or I may not use it.

or

2. Create one site with separate nagivation architectures, for each of the
user groups. So, upon entry into the site, I identify myself as user "x" and
the site has a navigation structure that's relevant to me only, and I do not
see other functionality that is not relevant to me or that I will not use.

Again, I am looking for documented resources/references only that address
this. Please forward responses to me and I will collate for the list.

Thanks.
