Hey -

You might want to check out this paper put together by MSN's Usability
Research group:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/management/planning/improvingsiteusa.
asp

It's about "Improving Web Site Usability and Appeal", but has a whole
section on using multimedia.

On that note, I think you really have to consider the audience you are
targeting for this website with sound. Keep in mind that some people's
computers do not have sound (such as a work computer, where the company
decided not to install sound cards...), as well as people with hearing
disabilities. I would suggest not making ANY of the functionality
dependent on hearing the sound. However, if your audience are
"Multi-media junkies", then you might be able to assume that they will
always have sound on their computers. These users might be more engaged
in your site has cool sound.

Subject: SIGIA-L: Users / Sound / the internet

Hi everyone,
We're looking for any information on user reaction to web sites
employing sound as an integral part of the concept
Am curious as to which side of the "this makes the site!" or "annoys the
living hell" fence visitors tend to fall. Does anyone have direct
exprience or a source to suggest?

many thanks-
terie
