Very true. That's why it is always preferable to use 'canned' solutions,
since they frequently have been tested thoroughly. A great example of such
a prefabricated solution is Peter Belesis's Hierarchical Menus
(http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/column51/). Peter's menu scripts (which
work for Nescape 4.x/6, and IE 4.x,5.x(pc) and IE5(mac) ) are the basis for
DHTML menus on Northwest Airline's site. The menu's scripts are written by
a more than capable coder and the large user base provides valuable feedback
and bug reporting.
Also, the Northwest Airlines site (http://www.nwa.com/) shows how to make a
site with DHTML menus compatable with older browsers or those with
javascript disabled. They simply make each of the buttons a link to a
subcategory page that contains links to all of the pages in the menus.

Peter Belesis' script is less than 25k and is cached for all subsequent page
views, so you only have a significant performance hit on the first page
viewed.
