The big question on any ancillary code used on a web site is "who do you
exclude?". If the answer to that question is one that you/the client find
acceptable, then you can look at the functional merits of the decision.
As always, start with the relationship between the user, the information
itself and probable attributes of the experience.
Who are the users? How unique is one sub-user group from another? Each group
will have a primary infomration target that they will be "sniffing" (thanks
Jared) for...how distinct are those primary information paths? Is this a
site where vistors will linger or is it commodity information that they want
to find fast and leave?
The big functional advantage to DHTML menus is that it gives users a peek
behind the page to "scout" or "sniff" out their information path. If the
user group is so disparate that you can't reasonably represent what they
should expect to find at the home page level (the reason may be page real
estate or simply a broad volume on information), the ability to quickly view
a secondary infomation layer will help the visitor qualify their need to be
there.
Another functional concern is the amount of information in the drop-downs.
How will it display if you have too many items in the list? What does that
do to your layout? Another good example is Northwest Airlines.
www.northwestairlines.com It was recently cited by Gomez as the "best web
site in the industry".
I hope that helps give you a logic path to follow.
Good luck,

Subject: SIGIA-L: DHTML and secondary navigation
Hi all-
I am looking for opinions on DHTML and its use in secondary
navigation. We have a client thinking of using it and I would like some
ammunition (both good and bad) as to why they should or should not think
about using it.
I have a few ideas but I would like to know what the general
opinion out there is...
Please take a look at <http://www.sportsline.com/>
http://www.sportsline.com/ as an example that the client has looked at and
likes
Please send all responses to me and I will post a summary!
Thank you in advance!
Karin
