For a little bit of history, and a lot of laughs, about the origin of
English and all of its variations, check out Bill Bryson's book "Mother
Tongue". Not that it has anything to do with Information Architecture
directly, but anyway...

Also, a mini-response to Robert's point 4. If one is truly respectful of
others' cultures, there really shouldn't be a need to be politically
correct, unless politically correct means something different in the UK than
it does in the US. I find these two to be somewhat contradictory. But then
I'm always looking for utopia. End of soap-box stint.
