Schon's "The Design Studio : An Exploration of Its Traditions and Potentials
(Architecture and the Higher Learning)" comes to mind as relevent. He
argues that the practice of teaching design in the architectural studio
should be applied in other disciplines and that an emerging school of
thought was solving problems as exercises in design. Written in 1985.

The state university here has a "school of design" and within that is the
department of architecture. I've seen other universities with the same
'taxonomy' at work.
Definitely precedent :-)
Design is a big subject. Like "Philosophy" or "Science" -- it's the making
of things for use.
