SIGIA-L: splash screens

I wonder if anyone has any figures to help me have a stronger argument.
I have a client who wants a screen before the home page that has some fancy imagery, and a sign
saying 'welcome to XXXX'. The user would then click on this page and be taken to the home page. This
'welcome page' would appear every time the user visited the site, ie a splash screen.
My instincts tell me this is a bad idea, but the client needs some more convincing. Has anyone seen
or heard of a site doing anything like this and losing visitors? Even anecdotal evidence would help.
As ever, send all replies to me and I'll summarise and send to the list.
