SIGIA-L: tree navigation

Hello,
I’m an information architect working for a company that produces a wide
variety of web-based informational sites. I’d like to get some opinions
about a job I’m working on. The project basically consists of building a
web version of a product that teaches cultural information for the countries
of the world. Right now the main method of navigation we are considering is
a navigational tree along the left side of the screen, allowing users to
jump from one country to another. Whether this list is organized
alphabetically, by continent, or by some other means still has to be
determined.
My question is if this is the best method of navigation for this type of
information. I’m having trouble coming up with better alternatives, but
some people within the company are hoping for other choices since in the
past we have run into problems with users being able to navigate efficiently
with a hierarchical tree method (the context in that particular case was
with an on-line archive of magazines we publish).
Any help or comments on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
