This is forwarded (with permission) from the oss4lib (Open Source Systems
for Libraries) list. I thought Daniel's description of "the two cultures"
might provide some light-hearted relief about this thread.

Had a really good trip to the Javits center Wednesday for linuxworld conf/expo. I'm telling ya, if you've not yet spent time working on free software projects then you still haven't realized just how deeply this community is similar to our own. We were separated at birth, I guess, and grew up in different nations on different continents with different languages which use different writing systems. And then all of a sudden here comes the internet and email and we all start communicating in our Pidgin Jargon influenced broken english and our kindred genes and souls are somehow slowly reunited, with wave after wave of realization and familiarity crashing down on us like in some human interest piece on the local news:

hacker: "Mhz waferstepper rev build target?" librarian: "MARC MARC MARC. Reference service Z39.50?" hacker: "Reference counting, garbage collection?" librarian: "Weed, not garbage." hacker: "Oh. Embedded telephony API, content RDF discovery." librarian: "RDF? Collection searching?" hacker: "RDF!!!! Yes, searching content collections!!" librarian: "Ha ha ha, yes, RDF!!!" hacker: "Lemme buy you a drink."

I mean, we're still like cousins once removed, not identical twins, but it's not that far off.

Anyway, I'm working on a conference report wiki, and forgetting some stuff now that I'll add in when it comes back. The wiki's here:

http://oss4lib.org/wiki/?LinuxWorldConfExpo2001

Anybody else make it? Please fill in the many gaps I'm leaving if so.

-Dan
