Craig,
PayPal links the field label ("Card Verification Number") to an openWindow
with the caption:
"PayPal requires, for your safety and security, that you enter your card's
verification number, if one is available. If one is not available, please
try using a different card." and an image with a callout to the number.
If left blank, validation returns the user with the added warning:
"Please enter the 3-digit card verification number listed on the back of
your card. If your card does not have a verification number, we will soon be
offering an alternative method of registering cards."
As a pop-up, the added field does not affect the flow per se, as the
authorization number is one of several items subordinate to the CC number
field. A failed authorization (5 attempts) invokes an ostensibly permanent
refusal of the associated CC number, disrupting (by design) the transaction.
If you have a PayPal account, select "Add a Credit Card" too see the form.
