As both a graphic designer by formal training and an Information Architect
by career evolution, I have to agree with George Olsen and his statements
about the nature of designers, our training and the need for collaboration.
I evolved over time in my own career as I made the shift from print design
(I designed print brochures, large systems of pieces, annual reports, books
etc) and moved into interaction design where the function of the piece was
first and the form was second. My training in graphic/information design has
helped me immeasurably in dealing with organizing large amounts of
information.
As a manager of an experience design team, I saw and practiced the idea of
collaborative efforts. Some members of the team were visual designers, some
were information experts, some did both and sometimes they switched roles on
different projects because of subject matter expertise.
This philosophy and practice enabled us to get over the issues that arise
when a designer feels the IA is handing over something that just needs to be
"made pretty". Group collaboration and experiencing both sides of the
Experience Design coin helped to erase this kind of balkanization in my
team.
I think this is a terrific discussion and helps to point out that the role
of the IA is an evolving one and that the IA comes from a multitude of
disciplines and we need to continue to be cognizant that not all IAs have
the same background.
