“I use a kind of expert review technique that I call "Test Flying" that is
very inexpensive, yet useful at the point where some kind of prototype or
v-1 exists. As a review technique, it does not involve users, so I'm not
sure from your query ("ways to gather user feedback") if the details would
interest you. Let me know.
For very early user input, I lean toward what I call a "Blank Screen
Mockup." This is a collection of paper screen sketches with very little
detail. I use it to get to the questions:
1. What should the system capability be here (this screen)?
2. What should be on the screen to support the capability?
I often run this is a fish-bowl set-up, and if possible with two test users.
Of course, this gets fairly close to participatory design, except that the
goal is to get requirements and design ideas rather than to go all the way
through to a committed design.”

Subject: SIGIA-L: Usability Exercise Resources
Hi-
I'm wondering if folks can point to books/Web sites about quick usability
exercises to implement when clients don't want to pay for full-fledge
usability testing, etc. I'm looking for exercises to implement at different
points of the design process. Basically, creative, unique ways to gather
user feedback.
Obviously, card sorting would be an example of this. Another example is the
online exercise Nielsen presents on page 343 of his most recent book.
Please respond to me and I'll summarize for the group.
Thanks in advance!
