Okay, here is a basic compilation of the salary survey fellow list-watchers
were kind enough to participate in. I broke it out into the three levels I
asked about (IA, Senior IA, and Director of User Experience). In some cases
the jobs reported had different names but the same general gist (usability
stuff). I broke out the results into three markets: high, medium and low.
High encompasses places like NYC, Boston, San Francisco. Medium covers
places like Denver, Chicago, Atlanta. Low covers more rural areas and
smaller cities with less of an economy to support new media jobs (like New
Hampshire or Syracuse, NY). I give the average based on everything I got,
the high and the low. In some cases the high and low throw the average, so I
also give the most frequent numbers. I only compiled US figures. If you want
UK or Canada numbers, I could tally up the ten or so I got from each for
you.
There didn't seem to be a huge discrepancy between industry or company
size...the main factor seemed to be geography. And there wasn't as huge a
leap between markets as I expected to see either.
Most who wrote mentioned that these were base salaries, and that they also
received bonuses, stock options (lots, in the case of senior positions),
great benefits, comp time and lots of vacation, etc. All that being said,
thanks to everyone who wrote in with their information, and maybe I'll get
to actually meet some of you at the ACIA conference in San Diego for those
who will be attending later this month.

Director- average 122K, high 225K, low 95K, most frequent 110/120K
Senior IA- average 90K, high 130K, low 60K, most frequent 80/100K
IA- average 72K, high 130K, low 45K, most frequent 70K
Mid-size Market:
Director- average 104K, high 140K, low 75K, most frequent 100K
Senior IA- average 85K, high 110K, low 65K, most frequent 70/80K
IA- average 62K, high 90K, low 45K, most frequent 55/65K
Small Market:
Director- average 83K, high 90K, low 78.5K
Senior IA- average 77K, high 100K, low 60K, most frequent 70K
IA- average 55K, high 75K, low 40K, most frequent 50K
