RE: SIGIA-L: certification?

IMHO, IA certification seems impractical at this time. IA practitioners
come from a wide variety of backgrounds and different professional
groupings, e.g.,
ARMA, ASIS, ALA, CIPS, etc. So incorporating a single, recognized IA
certification within an existing professional society does not seem
feasible. And forming a separate professional IA society which would
provide certification would be a *huge* amount of work, and then there is
the matter of getting the certification formally recognized outside of such
a society. I think any attempt to formalize such a dynamic field right now
would be counter-productive. Perhaps at some point in the future, two or
more professional societies or associations could jointly establish an IA
certification standard and process. Who knows?
